Rousseff abandons ostracism and takes a bath with the crowds at Lula’s new cabinet meeting

One of the images left by the return of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the Brazilian presidency has been the gradual return of former president Dilma Rousseff to the forefront of the country’s political scene, after several years of ostracism and low popularity imposed by her impeachment in 2016.

Rousseff is one of the most recognizable faces of all the events that have been held after the confirmation of Lula da Silva’s victory in the second round on October 30, even receiving a standing ovation at the inaugurations of the new ministers she has attended.

A gesture that in Brazil is understood as a sort of recognition after the bad moments she went through a few years ago after her abrupt departure from the Presidency of Brazil, with some former political rivals acknowledging having made a mistake by voting in favor of that impeachment trial.

«Her presence here in this act, as she was received, is a historical reparation for the injustices she suffered,» said last Monday the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, at her inauguration, while praises were heard for Rousseff and boos for one of the most active in that impeachment, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira.

On Tuesday, it was the new Secretary of Social Communication, Paulo Pimenta, who expressed himself in similar terms upon taking office and denounced that Rousseff was the victim of a «historic injustice». Words that the former president, who said she was «very moved», thanked him for showing her gratitude.

Rousseff’s figure has been recognized and applauded even in those inauguration ceremonies she did not attend, such as that of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira — who was already in her government in the same portfolio –, who recalled that impeachment trial as a «painful process that left marks».

Since Rousseff appeared as a visible face in Lula da Silva’s campaign, there has always been speculation as to whether she would have a position in the new cabinet. Although the already Brazilian president ruled out her presence as well as that of other «historical» ones, throughout these months she has had to disavow other past statements.

Thus, from the leadership of the Workers’ Party (PT), as pointed out by the Brazilian media, there are supporters of Rousseff being appointed Brazilian ambassador to Portugal or Argentina, although there is also the fear that the initiative will be overturned by the Senate, which is in charge of approving these nominations.
