At least two shells hit a base of the U.S.-led international coalition in the eastern Syrian province of Deir Ezzor on Wednesday, the U.S. military confirmed, saying the incident was without casualties.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the shells were fired at around 9 a.m. local time at a support base known as Conoco.
«The attack caused no injuries or damage to the base or coalition property,» it said, before adding that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) — led by the Kurdish militia People’s Protection Units (YPG) — found a third unused shell after inspecting the area.
CENTCOM spokesman Joe Buccino stressed that «attacks of this kind endanger coalition forces and civilians and undermine hard-won stability and security in Syria and the region.»
For its part, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, with informants in the Arab country, has indicated that the shots were allegedly fired by pro-Iranian militiamen, although there is no claim of responsibility for the attack.
