Belarusian authorities on Thursday denounced «provocative acts» by armed Ukrainian servicemen on the border between the two countries in the face of increased tension due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The authorities of the Border Control Department have pointed out that there have been «isolated cases of provocations from the Ukrainian side» and detailed that the latest of them has taken place at the Podobrianka checkpoint, where several servicemen have pointed their weapons at members of the Belarusian Border Guard.
Moreover, they have denounced that the Ukrainian servicemen have uttered insults against the Belarusian officers, whom they have threatened. «These provocations are uncontrollable,» the authorities said in a statement.
«The border is not being guarded, there are simply some paramilitary groups with weapons. Without insignia, without uniform,» they warned before indicating that this «poses a serious danger» in the area.
The country’s president, Alexander Lukashenko, has indicated that the Ukrainian Army has decided to deploy some 15,000 troops to the border areas in the middle of the war.
He has also called for speeding up measures to make ports available in Russia, according to information from the BelTA news agency. «It is necessary to discuss logistics on this issue. I think that the outstanding issues have been resolved to get Russia to open a number of ports for us on its territory,» he has said.
«We have already started shipments, but we need these ports to prepare faster for our arrival,» he has pointed out in connection with the sanctions imposed by the West, which prevent Belarus from exporting goods through ports located in Baltic countries.
