U.S. President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that he is organizing a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, in what would be his first visit there since taking office.
Biden, when asked by reporters whether he will visit the border when he travels next week to the North American Leaders Summit in Mexico City, has indicated that this is his «intention.» «We’re working out the details now,» he added.
This visit, if it finally takes place, comes in the midst of an immigration crisis that is «straining the system,» as acknowledged by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, as reported by CNN.
«We are operating within a system that is fundamentally broken. No one disagrees with that. We just can’t seem to agree on the solution,» he said, referring to the end of Title 42, a Trump-era border policy that allows the administration to deny migrants the opportunity to apply for asylum on health grounds without an individual assessment.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in late December that Title 42 would remain in effect until the end of the legal dispute in all states. Biden said that while this border policy is «overdue,» it should be implemented for now.
