Chadian government spokesman Aziz Mahamat Saleh said Thursday that eleven army soldiers, including the president of the Human Rights Organization, Baradine Berdei Targuio, have been arrested for an attempted coup d’état in December.
Those implicated in the coup, which was foiled by the security services, have been handed over to the judicial authorities. Specifically, they face charges of disturbing constitutional order, criminal association, illegal possession of firearms and complicity, Alwihda reported.
«The judicial procedure is still underway and the government intends to clarify this matter and determine responsibilities», said Mahamat Saleh, who also informed that the authorities have seized «transmission equipment» during the investigations.
This comes shortly after Idriss Youssouf Boy became chief of staff of the transitional president, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. His former secretary is implicated in a case of embezzlement of billions of CFA francs at the Chadian Hydrocarbon Company.
Mahamat Déby’s mandate was consolidated for another two years in early October following «national dialogues» boycotted by most members of the opposition, as well as two of the three main armed rebel groups and numerous civil society organizations.
