Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that the government is considering bringing forward the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for June 18, without giving further details.
Erdogan said during a meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) that these elections are «important». «We will reconsider the date due to seasonal conditions,» he said, as reported by the Turkish state news agency Anatolia.
According to reports in the Turkish daily ‘Hurriyet’, the AKP is considering bringing forward the elections due to the fact that university exams are scheduled on these dates, with April 30 and May 14 as other possibilities.
Erdogan hinted in December his intention to seek popular support for a final five-year presidential term in the 2023 general elections before retiring from political life.
The incumbent served as prime minister from 2003 to 2014 and has been the nation’s president ever since. A constitutional amendment in 2017 changed the system to an executive presidency model and Erdogan was elected president in 2018.
