The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, held a telephone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba on Friday about the latest attacks by Russian forces in Ukraine.
Both condemned the attacks perpetrated by Russia with «missiles and drones» against «vital infrastructure, including residential buildings» over the last few weeks.
«I had a conversation with Josep Borrell in view of the preparations for the next bilateral summit with the EU on February 3. I have conveyed to him what our expectations are and we have focused on the format to be successful,» Kuleba stated on his Twitter account.
Borrell, for his part, said in a statement that the «barbaric attacks» by the Russian army in Ukraine «constitute war crimes» and warned that «all Russian political and military leaders involved (…) will be brought to justice».
«These attacks are a contradiction to the unilateral ceasefire announced by President Vladimir Putin. This ceasefire does not change the fact that Russia is illegally occupying parts of Ukraine», he has asserted.
In this sense, he warned that this measure, «in the absence of concrete measures, only looks like an attempt to buy time to rethink and regroup troops as (Russia) tries to repair its reputation internationally.»
