The governor of the U.S. state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has ordered the activation of the National Guard in response to a significant increase since October in arrivals of Cuban migrants, especially during the last few days, to the Keys areas.
In a statement published Friday afternoon and reported by the news portal Politico, DeSantis blames these new arrivals on the «negative impact of the lawless immigration policies» of the White House.
«The burden of this failure falls on the local forces of law and order, which lack the resources to deal with this crisis,» said the governor, considered by experts as a possible favorite of the Republican party for the final nomination for the presidency of the country in 2024.
According to U.S. Coast Guard data, authorities have intercepted 4,153 Cuban migrants since last October 1, a substantially higher number than the 838 interceptions throughout 2021. More than 500 Cuban migrants have arrived in the Florida Keys in the last two days, to which must be added a hundred Haitians who arrived in Key Largo last Tuesday, escaping the critical situation in their country.
This deployment takes place during the visit that Biden is preparing this weekend to the US-Mexico border and after the introduction on Thursday of a new policy that would allow the monthly entry into the country of up to 30,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
