Justice ministers from around the world will meet in London next March to support the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigation into alleged war crimes committed in the war in Ukraine.
As announced Saturday by the British Ministry of Justice, the investigation into the alleged crimes will be high on the country’s agenda within the next three months.
Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab will host the meeting in the capital, which will take place at Lancaster House, alongside his Dutch counterpart, Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius.
The group will hear from International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan on the work of the court and the role of the international community in supporting its investigations.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure aimed at undermining the combat capability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and «nationalist battalions», which has been condemned by the international community for cutting off central heating supplies during freezing winter temperatures.
In addition, according to the British portfolio, Khan is also investigating charges against Russian soldiers for war crimes, after Kiev alleged the execution and rape of civilians during the armed conflict.
«Russian forces must know that they cannot act with impunity and we will stand by Ukraine until justice is done,» the British justice minister added.
«Almost a year after the illegal invasion, the international community must give its strongest backing to the ICC to hold war criminals to account for the atrocities we are witnessing,» he added.
Among its objectives, the meeting will serve to coordinate countries in providing practical support to the tribunal, such as gathering information, evidence or helping victims and witnesses to testify.
