The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, will meet this Saturday with the heads of public health and with experts from the health sector in order to improve the National Health Service (NHS), which has been immersed in a deep crisis for weeks.
The British premier’s meeting will focus on addressing social care and delays in patient discharge, urgent and emergency care, as well as elective care and primary care, according to a statement from Downing Street.
«As the prime minister made clear this week, alleviating immediate pressures (the recent rise in COVID-19 and flu cases) while focusing on the long-term improvement of the NHS is one of his key pledges,» a UK government spokesperson said.
«That’s why we are bringing together the best minds from the health and care sectors to help share knowledge and practical solutions so that we can address the most crucial challenges, such as delayed discharge and emergency care,» he added.
In terms of improving NHS capacity, the British Executive has said it has earmarked an additional 500 million pounds (567 million euros) to accelerate hospital discharge this winter, as well as increasing bed capacity by 7,000 more.
Sunak’s call comes after the healthcare workers have been on strike in recent weeks, expressing their dissatisfaction with the functioning of the National Health System.
