A total of 103,277 faithful participated this Sunday in the Traslación procession of the Black Nazarene between the Quirino Grandstand and the San Juan Bautista Church or Quiapo Church in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
The Quiapo Church Command reported this attendance figure for the final act of the transfer of the figure of Jesus of Nazareth to the temple, while it counted 37,665 faithful at the Quirino Grandstand, in the Rizal Square of the Philippine capital, according to the Philippine newspaper ‘Inquirer’.
It is the first time that the Traslacion is celebrated since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, thus recovering a tradition that culminates on January 9. The procession lasted more than two hours, between 1:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., a relatively small figure compared to the 22 hours it lasted.
The Philippine Red Cross has reported that it attended to some 50 people who required assistance or first aid during the procession, although there is no record of serious injuries. The Manila Police also confirmed that there were no major incidents.
The Traslación commemorates the 1787 transfer of the image of Jesus from Bagumbayan, now Rizal Park, and the Quiapo Church, where a Mass is celebrated after the procession.
