The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation on Sunday condemned the «unacceptable» executions in Iran on Saturday, January 7, of two protesters convicted of the death of a security guard during one of multiple nationwide protests against the death in custody of young Mahsa Amini.
«Spain opposes the death penalty in all countries and circumstances,» the department said in a message posted on the social network Twitter.
These facts have also been denounced by the EU, which declared itself «horrified» after the news of the protesters. The European body reiterated its «firm» and «principled» opposition to capital punishment as «a cruel and inhuman punishment, which does not act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity.»
Brussels also called once again on the authorities to put an end to this «deeply reprehensible practice» and asked them to suspend the possibility of the death sentence to which more than a hundred detainees risk being sentenced, according to local NGOs.
In this sense, the Spanish Embassy in Iran has been closely following for weeks the cases of the two Spaniards detained by the Iranian authorities and has kept the families of both informed, according to diplomatic sources told Europa Press.
The president of Iran’s Supreme Court, Gholam Hosein Mohseni Ejei, informed last Monday, January 2, that 3,000 prisoners will be released in the coming days on the anniversary of the death of General Qasem Soleimani after a U.S. bombing in Iraq in January 2020.
Iran’s top judicial representative has also indicated that the death sentences of 16 convicts will be reduced. This decision has been taken, according to Mohseni Ejei, in commemoration of Soleimani, who made numerous efforts to help the needy, IRNA news agency reported.
