Russian businessman and founder of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has explained his determination to take over the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut because of the «network of subway cities» in the region.
Asked by the media about the Wagner group’s interest in taking the city of Bakhmut, Prigozhin has stated that the region is a «central point of the Eastern Front» and an «important logistic hub,» the company has shared on its official Telegram channel.
«The icing on the cake is the Soledar and Bajmut mining system, which is actually a network of subway cities,» the businessman has clarified.
«Not only does it have the capacity to house a large group of people at a depth of 80-100 meters, but tanks and infantry fighting vehicles can also be moved,» the Russian oligarch has added and claims that stockpiles of weapons have already been stored in those tunnels since World War I.
The businessman also emphasized the unique geographical and historical defensive capability of the city, firstly because of its division by water barriers, and secondly, because of the region’s surroundings that create «a unique defensive system».
In this regard, and the framework of the Russian attacks, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, denounced on Sunday Moscow’s shelling of the locality of Bajmut, in the eastern region of Donetsk, which caused the death of two civilians.
The Ukrainian leader has reported these attacks in his daily address to the nation in which he also accused Moscow for its «false words» for allegedly violating the ceasefire during the Orthodox Christmas holidays.
«The world was able to see today once again how false Moscow’s words are at all levels. There they said something about a so-called cease-fire…. But the reality is that Russian shells again hit Bakhmut and other Ukrainian positions,» the Ukrainian leader said in a speech delivered at midnight, the time marking the end of the truce.
