The Belgian government and the electricity company Engie have reached an agreement to extend the operation of the Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear power plants for ten years in order to guarantee energy supply.
«With these decisions, work on the extension of the two most modern nuclear power plants can start tomorrow,» Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo explained at a press conference.
This expansion will serve to ensure the country’s energy security for the next decade in a joint project of the state and the electricity company Engie.
Brussels announced in March last year that Tihange 3 and Doel 4 would operate until the end of 2035, pending negotiations with Engie on the implementation of this measure. The initial target was to close the Belgian nuclear power plants in 2025, but this was revised after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
