Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva issued a joint statement on Monday after meeting with the leaders of the country’s main institutions in which they stressed their unity to defend democracy and the Constitution after the attack by the coup mob sympathetic to Jair Bolsonaro.

«The powers of the republic, defenders of democracy and the Constitutional Charter of 1988, reject the terrorist, vandalism, criminal and coup acts that happened yesterday afternoon in Brasilia,» the communiqué begins.

The letter was ratified by Lula himself, as well as by the president of the Supreme Court, Rosa Weber, and the leaders of the Congress, Arthur Lira of the Chamber of Deputies and Vital do Rego of the Senate, Veneziano do Rego.

«We are united so that institutional providences are taken under the terms of Brazilian laws. We call on society to maintain serenity in defense of peace and democracy,» the note reads.

Finally, the signatories of the same request that Brazil returns to «normality» under the umbrella of «respect» and «work» to achieve «progress and social justice» that the nation needs.

The communiqué comes after the emergency meeting called by President Lula after the assault on the headquarters of the three branches of government: the Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Supreme Court. The meeting took place in the office of the Brazilian president, the only space that has avoided being vandalized.

The meeting was attended by other Supreme Court justices, such as Luís Roberto Barroso and Dias Toffoli, as well as several cabinet ministers, such as the head of the Civil House, Rui Costa, or the heads of Finance, Fernando Haddad, Justice, Flávio Dino, and Defense, José Múcio, among others.

DISTRUST IN THE SECURITY CABINET The figure of Minister Múcio has been the target of criticism not only among the rank and file of the Workers’ Party, but also by other cabinet colleagues, such as Minister Dino, who understands that he allowed the camp to continue after Lula da Silva was sworn in a week ago.

Dino made public the distrust of a part of the Government which considers that those responsible for the Institutional Security Cabinet did not do enough to prevent and contain the assailants, stressing that the contingent in charge of the security of the Presidency did not act.

«Why it did not act is really the objective of an investigation that does not correspond to the Ministry of Justice, but is specific to the GSI and the Ministry of Defense. I want to believe that this investigation will happen,» said Minister Dino.

The distrust of Lula’s government with the GSI goes back a long way, after the GSI was not included in the security operation for the inauguration. After the attacks carried out by Bolsonaro’s supporters, it was also decided to leave them out of the most immediate operations.

As for Minister Múcio, whose conciliatory role with the Armed Forces was highlighted for his election as Minister of Defense, the PT rank and file now remember how he insisted that the demonstrations in front of the Army headquarters in Brasília where the assailants came from were «democratic».

«Those demonstrations in the camp, and I say this with great authority because I have relatives and friends there, are a manifestation of democracy,» the defense minister said at the time.
