European far-right dissociates itself from bolsonaristas’ assault on institutions in Brazil

Far-right political leaders in Europe have distanced themselves from the violent demonstrations perpetrated in Brazil by followers of former president Jair Bolsonaro, with particular forcefulness in the case of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

«What is happening in Brazil cannot leave us indifferent,» said Meloni, in a Twitter message in which she described as «unacceptable» the coordinated assault on the main institutions of the three powers in Brazil.

In his opinion, this type of incidents «are unacceptable and incompatible with any form of democratic dissent». «It is urgent that there be a return to normality and we express solidarity with the Brazilian institutions,» he said.

For his part, the leader of the French National Rally, Jordan Bardella, has «of course» condemned the incidents, warning that, in democracy, one must «accept the results». However, he ruled out that mobilizations of this caliber could take place in France, despite the discrepancies that may exist with the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

The Portuguese André Ventura, leader of the Chega! party, said, however, that he «understands» the «pain» of those who «suddenly» find themselves governed «by a bandit ex-president», in reference to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who spent time in prison for a conviction that was later annulled.

However, «democracy has its own rules and it is in the democratic arena that we must fight, not with violence», he proclaimed.
