Polish authorities on Monday threatened the German government with «embarrassing» the country before the international community if it refuses to negotiate the payment of reparations for damages caused during World War II.
Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pavel Jablonski said in statements reported by Polskie Radio that the issue could become a «big problem» for the German authorities’ image.
Thus, he has warned that Berlin has responded to the Polish government’s requests with «arrogance and disrespect towards the victims». «Let’s talk about it very loudly. Germany says it wants to be a precedent-setting state in terms of human rights, but at the same time it does these things,» he added. «It is going to become a big problem for them and they are going to be ashamed,» he insisted four months after the government presented a report on the losses suffered by Poland during Nazi Germany’s attacks and occupation of the territory. On October 3, Foreign Minister Zbigniew Ray signed a note demanding compensation from Germany.
However, Berlin has insisted that it sees no reason to make such payments, considering that Poland renounced reparations in 1953. Now, the government claims that the agreement was signed under Soviet pressure with the German Democratic Republic, which «was not a sovereign state».
