The new president of the Venezuelan National Assembly elected in 2015 and extended since then under opposition control, Dinorah Figuera, announced Monday that its representations abroad, officially recognized by countries such as the United States, will be reduced from 60 to 5.
Precisely, the United States, Canada and France will continue to have an official representation of the National Assembly elected in 2015 with the format of ‘ad honorem’ representatives who will no longer be ambassadors.
«From 60 embassies they will go down to five, ‘ad honorem’ representatives will be appointed in countries that are needed to attend to migration, possible actions because that was a bureaucracy», explained Figuera in a press conference by videoconference held this Monday from Spain and picked up by opposition media.
«As ambassadors there were many limitations. Some were not recognized by the country although they were allowed to be. The most active were Colombia, Brazil, United States, but in others there was no possibility to act diplomatically. Expenses are reduced,» he added.
Figuera also referred to the arrest warrant against her and two other vice-presidents of the assembly released on Sunday and stressed that «if they intend to take action against the board of directors, in principle, they will not be able to». «We will continue with more strength to fight and consolidate actions on our plan,» she stressed.
For the leader of the Primero Justicia party, «as long as they continue persecuting, we will continue with an agenda for the country». «We will not give up in the fight for democracy», he reiterated.
«The plan is to face Venezuela and recover unity, on the basis of strengthening it». «We are going to accompany Venezuelans in their struggles», he has assured.
Regarding the management of Venezuelan assets abroad, Figuera has indicated that a Citizen Council will be appointed away from partisan positions and has acknowledged that they lack information. «The reality is that we do not know many things, such as how the money from the payments was used», she admitted.
Figuera has also defended the recent decision to dissolve the interim presidency held by Juan Guaidó because «it had already served its term». «If a strategy did not work out, you have to change. Politics is dynamic and this was what led the majority of the parliament to make decisions (…). We have a plan to get out of the dictatorship, that is our north. The interim government had three plans that were not fulfilled», he argued.
The 2015 National Assembly has recently extended its mandate for the third consecutive year in the face of what they consider illegitimate elections promoted by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
