U.S. Senator Angus King, who traveled to Ukraine over the weekend to meet with President Volodimir Zelenski, has compared Russian head of state Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler and called for his arrest to prevent further deaths.
Speaking to CBS television, King recalled that if Hitler had been arrested for his involvement in the Rhineland crises of 1936 and the Sudetenland two years later, millions of lives could have been saved.
«Right now we know that Putin wants to take over Ukraine. He wants to rebuild the Soviet Union (…) And this is the moment where he can be stopped,» the U.S. senator remarked.
«They, the Ukrainians, are fighting for us, for our values, and the help we are giving them is not charity. It is self-interest», King remarked, who warned that the Donbas region presents a scenario reminiscent of the First World War.
On this point, King said he was committed to continuing to provide arms supplies to Ukraine, although he is aware, and he said he told Zelenski, that if the Ukrainian troops do not use these weapons properly, U.S. aid will be cut off.
King visited Ukraine over the weekend along with fellow Senator Jack Reed. The two met with Zelenski to discuss the situation on the front lines and to assess the arms and economic supplies approved by Washington.
