Venezuela’s Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, announced Tuesday that they have requested Interpol to issue a red alert for arrest against the new board of directors of the Venezuelan National Assembly elected in 2015 and controlled since then by the opposition.
It specifically mentions Dinorah Jaxilda Figuera Tovar –Primero Justicia–, elected president of the chamber, as well as Auristela del Valle de Castillo –Acción Democrática– and Marianela Fernández Alvarado –Un Nuevo Tiempo– as vice presidents, as reported by Venezuelan news portal Últimas Noticias. Figuera and Del Castillo live in Spain, while Fernández lives in the United States.
Saab has explained that these three persons are wanted for the «theft of Venezuelan assets», usurpation of functions, association to commit crimes and treason and has highlighted that the arrest warrant includes «seizure and securing of assets, blocking and immobilization of accounts and prohibition to alienate and encumber».
He also revealed that arrest warrants have also been issued against the new secretary of the opposition assembly, José Figueredo Márquez, and against the undersecretary Luis Alberto Bustos.
The 2015 National Assembly has recently extended its mandate for the third consecutive year in view of what they consider illegitimate elections promoted by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Saab has argued that «according to our legislation, a parliamentarian elected in 2015 completes his term in 2020.» «How is it possible that in 2023 some subjects outside the law self-proclaimed themselves as a parliamentary commission to supposedly watch over the country’s assets abroad?» he has raised.
Saab has directly linked the existence of this parallel legislative power with the sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies. «In assets and resources blocked, withheld or confiscated outside the country; it is estimated that Venezuela has been caused a patrimonial damage that can be placed above 30 billion dollars», has highlighted the prosecutor.
«Thanks to the criminal actions of this group of thugs who call themselves the interim government. They have given a bullet to ethics in politics. A bad example for future generations (…) (They are) «the worst organized political gang (…) that uses politics to plunder Venezuela’s assets abroad», he denounced.
«They have taken advantage of extreme political circumstances, such as the arrival of Donald Trump to the Presidency of the United States to make a phantasmagoric fictitious government and coup d’état attempts», he has reiterated.
Specifically, he has referred to transactions such as the recent delivery of 2.7 billion dollars by the United States «to this criminal group called ‘interim government'» which was reported by the US State Department itself. «It is not about donated money, it is about money of all Venezuelans that has been stolen by this group of criminals. Where is that money? I imagine it is in the purchase of assets outside the country and in tax havens,» Saab said.
On Sunday, the issuance of arrest warrants against Figuera, Del Valle and Fernández by the 49th Control Court of the Criminal Judicial Circuit of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas was already known, to which the 2015 assembly reacted by criticizing «the fierce onslaught of Nicolás Maduro’s regime that is part of its systematic repression of democratic forces».
Also the Unitary Platform that groups opposition parties has stressed that «the 2015 National Assembly is the legitimate institution that enjoys the international recognition of important countries such as the United States, Germany, France, Canada, among others».
Figuera recently declared that the opposition decided that the new board of directors should be outside the country «to guarantee the security of the board of directors in the face of possible attacks by the regime», according to the news portal Efecto Cocuyo, which is related to the opposition.
