Brazil’s Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, has reported that Brazilian authorities have identified in ten states those responsible for financing participants in the assault on democratic institutions in Brasilia.
«It is still not possible to clearly distinguish responsibilities in terms of financing. What can be fully affirmed is that there was financing. We have a list of all the bus contractors,» explained Dino.
Likewise, the portfolio holder has added that «all these people will be called to testify, because the buses have been contracted and were not intended for tourist excursions».
On the other hand, Dino blamed the government of the Federal District, indicating that the planning of the public security forces of Brasilia was «decisive» in making the assault on the public buildings possible.
The minister also assured that he intends to return the management of public security to the Brasília authorities «as soon as possible», although he assured that there will be a «review» of the police force for its responsibility.
Dino has named this Sunday’s episode as «the Brazilian Capitol», in allusion to the invasion by supporters of former President Donald Trump of the US Congress in 2021.
«We lived in the Brazilian Capitol yesterday. With differences. Here there were no deaths and more prisoners than there,» he added in statements reported by Agencia Brasil.
More than one hundred buses left from ten different states for Brasilia on the eve of the attacks on state institutions for which some 1,500 people have been arrested. According to the Brazilian Minister of Justice, prominent businessmen are behind the chartering of these vehicles.
There has been an investigation since November last year, days after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory was confirmed, when the Federal Police and the Prosecutor’s Office opened a case on the financing of the protests that were called throughout the country by Bolsonaro’s supporters unhappy with his defeat.
It is being investigated, for example, how the extensive infrastructure was financed – portable toilets and free canteen included – that Bolsonaro’s supporters had in the camp they set up at the gates of the Army headquarters in Brasilia shortly after learning of Lula’s election victory.
President Lula has emphasized that they will investigate every last person responsible for financing protests that later turned into acts of coup d’état and has criticized those who paid for that did not participate in the assault, but served as a «manipulated mass» that was «fed» to go to protest.
For its part, the Attorney General’s Office of the Union (AGU) will file a request to block the assets of the companies suspected of having supported the mob that left behind a trail of destruction in the Three Powers Square, in line with the order decreed by the Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
The Supreme Court magistrate, one of the targets of the Bolsonarism that has emerged as one of the main figures behind the assault on the institutions, ordered the seizure of all the buses that transported the «terrorists» to Brasília and the summoning of their owners to testify and provide information on the passengers and those who chartered the vehicles.
