The Presidency of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and Mercosur have shown their support for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday, after they condemned the assault on democratic institutions.
The temporary presidency of Celac, held by Argentina, has «strongly repudiated the acts of violence and the assault on democratic institutions», in reference to the events that took place this Sunday in Brasilia.
«It constitutes an attack against democracy and the will of the people that deserves the rejection of the entire region,» reads a communiqué published by Celac.
Thus, the Argentine presidency has expressed its support for Lula, «who with his firm leadership and, together with the heads of the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and the Supreme Court, has ensured respect for the rule of law».
In this sense, the Argentine President, Alberto Fernández, highlighted the joint communiqué of the three branches of government, since «it shows that the violence of a few cannot impose itself on the peaceful coexistence of the Brazilian people».
«It is necessary to decisively confront those who mistreat democracy by installing hate speeches, insulting opponents and promoting lies in the media and social networks to generate unrest and anger,» the letter continues.
On the other hand, Fernandez has highlighted the «countless messages of support issued by the governments that make up Celac», which he describes as «a strong sign that the challenges of democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean are best faced in a united and supportive manner».
«It is clear that democracy is strengthened and deepened with more integration, more development and more institutions», added the president of Celac.
Mercosur, also temporarily presided over by Argentina, has shown its «solidarity with the Brazilian government and people».
The regional integration process, formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, has emphasized that this formation is «a solidarity project of peace, union and common development».
Therefore, Mercosur wanted to emphasize that in this project «there is no place for the violent people who mistreat democracy by installing hate speeches, insulting opponents and promoting lies in the media and social networks to generate anger».
