The Constitutional Court of Colombia has ordered on Tuesday the return of bullfighting to the country’s capital, Bogota, by requiring local authorities to respect the bullring as the only and permanent stage for this type of spectacle.
In its ruling, the Colombian Constitutional Court has urged the authorities of Bogota to respect a 2013 ruling which specifies that, as long as the Congress does not pronounce on the matter, bullfighting cannot be banned.
According to what was ruled this Tuesday by the Constitutional Court of Colombia, the District Institute of Recreation and Sports (IDRD) had also failed to comply with a sentence in which it was specified that the bullring La Santa María be enabled for bullfighting while the Congress resolved the prohibition, or not, of bullfights.
Thus, the Mayor’s Office of Bogota must now comply with the Constitutional Court’s order and allow the Bullring to be used for its original purpose, according to Colombian radio station RCN Radio.
The Colombian authorities have been studying for years the possibility of banning bullfighting. In fact, the Senate approved in mid-December the progressive prohibition of cruel entertainment practices with animals, pointing directly to bullfighting but leaving out other practices such as cockfighting.
