The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador expressed its concern on Monday over the new escalation of violence in protests in Peru and urged the country’s authorities to respect the proportionality of the use of force.
«We are very concerned about the continued escalation of violence in the protests in Peru, which has led to the loss of dozens of lives and an increase in the number of people injured every day,» the ICRC said in a statement posted on the social network Twitter.
The organization called on the Andean authorities to ensure respect for the principles of proportionality, legality and necessity in the use of force.
It also urged «all concerned actors» to respect the passage of ambulances and the work of the medical mission.
«Health personnel are key to bringing care to the wounded. Every minute counts,» reiterated the ICRC, recalling that the Peruvian Red Cross remains active in different regions of the country.
In this regard, it recalled that the work of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement «is neutral, impartial and independent».
«We act without taking sides in carrying out our humanitarian aid without distinction,» the organization added.
