Sweden’s Security Service insisted Tuesday that Russia «poses a serious threat» to the country and warned that, along these lines, Russian intelligence activities are expected to increase.

«Russian Intelligence and other security-threatening activities against Sweden can be expected to increase,» the Swedish Security Service has insisted, also stressing that «developments in the outside world constitute a broader constitutional threat.»

Swedish Intelligence has released a statement stressing that Russia considers the Nordic country not only as part of Europe, but also as part of the Atlantic Alliance, so it is to be expected that this type of espionage and anti-national security activities will increase.

The Swedish Security Service has identified three sectors where Russia could target for espionage and sabotage: energy supply systems, telecommunications and transport of critical supplies.

«These are sectors where attacks against Sweden could also cause damage to the rest of Europe,» said Swedish Intelligence, which considers that the war in Ukraine has changed the security paradigms not only at the national level, but on the continent as a whole.

To carry out these espionage and sabotage activities, Russia could now make use of «the Russian diaspora, institutions and companies in Sweden, as well as cyber attacks for the acquisition of information».

«The deterioration of the security situation leads to a broader constitutional threat. The Security Service sees an increased spread of conspiracy theories and anti-state messages, which ultimately risks undermining trust in society’s institutions, politicians’ decision-making and the legitimacy of the state,» the agency has concluded.
