The U.S. Government has issued a special license for the opposition-controlled National Assembly elected in Venezuela at the end of 2015 to continue controlling assets blocked abroad, following the end of the ‘interim government’ commanded by Juan Guaidó.
The US Treasury Department has updated its guidelines to leave said Assembly outside the vetoes imposed against the Government of Nicolás Maduro and other Chavista institutions, with which it continues to be vetoed «any transaction».
During the last few years, the cabinet constituted by Guaidó, as president of the opposition Parliament, had set itself up as guarantor of the assets kept blocked by administrations such as the US one.
Now, at least Washington guarantees that it will not cede any of these funds to Chavism, with or without Guaidó at the head of the opposition chamber, a gesture that the National Assembly, which describes itself as «legitimate», wanted to thank with a statement.
Thus, it has underlined its capacity to act in «defense of the State’s assets abroad». Five of its members will be in charge of these efforts, as well as of appearing in any possible proceedings or dispute over the control of the funds.
The Assembly, which maintains, for example, the ad hoc board established for the oil company PDVSA, has promised that it will work with «transparency» and in favor of the «de-partisanship» of the blocked assets.
«From the National Assembly, we continue to consolidate our support to our international allies regarding the protection and use of assets abroad for the benefit of Venezuelans and the recovery of democracy», he reiterated.
