The Ukrainian Armed Forces are preparing to defend themselves against a possible new attack by Russian ground troops from Belarusian territory against their capital, Kiev, as happened in the early stages of the war.
According to Lieutenant General Oleksei Pavliuk, responsible for the capital’s defense, the Ukrainian Army is preparing to reinforce defensive positions in the north of Ukraine, the route that Russian troops should follow on their way to Kiev.
In order to prevent the hypothetical advance of Russian tanks in the northern part of the country, the Ukrainian Army has planted large caliber mines in most of the accesses for tanks, which is expected to facilitate the defensive work of the Ukrainian artillery.
During the early stages of the war, Ukrainian forces repelled the advance of Russian troops leaving Belarusian territory in the direction of Kiev. A large column of Russian tanks and vehicles was decimated in the forests north of Kiev and forced to withdraw.
Ukrainian authorities appear to fear a new ground offensive by Russia, which has been deploying new, now more powerful units for weeks along Ukraine’s border with Belarus, the latter an open ally of Moscow.
However, Ukrainian military experts believe that Russia does not yet have enough units to launch a ground attack in the short term. In addition, Russia seems to be withdrawing some troops to eastern Ukraine in order to fix the Ukrainian Army’s attention there and keep two possible fronts open.
