Brazil’s Federal Police have prevented pro-Bolsonar deputies from going to the police stations to which the more than 1,500 people arrested for Sunday’s anti-democratic acts in Brasília were sent.
Deputies loyal to Bolsonaro such as Beatriz ‘Bia’ Kicis and the former Minister of Tourism Marcelo Álvaro have had their access to the National Academy of the Federal Police blocked when they tried to know the state of the facilities where the detainees were initially relocated.
«We have been here for three hours and we have not had access», protested Kicis, visible head of a delegation also formed by deputies Evair de Melo and Domingos Sávio. The liberal congresswoman has advanced that they will form «an external commission» to follow the investigations made against these people.
It was Kicis who had to deal with bolsonarista supporters angry at the silence and lack of support shown by their leader, who has been traveling in the United States since December 30. While recording a live broadcast for his social networks, a demonstrator asked him «where is Bolsonaro».
«Isn’t he going to say anything? Bolsonaro is being a coward, that’s the truth,» this person, who introduces himself as active military, is heard saying. Kicis, disgruntled, replied that she does not answer for the former president and that they will follow up on how the law is applied against detainees.
«We want the law to be applied, but not to punish conservatives and release criminals. There are extremists everywhere,» he said.
For his part, the Liberal Party (PL) deputy Marcelo Teixeira Dias, better known as Marcelo Álvaro Antonio, has asked the authorities to separate «the tares from the wheat» and not to detain «innocent people.
One of the reasons why the Federal Police has prevented the entry of congressmen sympathetic to Bolsonaro is because they suspect that they could have stimulated the attacks that took place on Sunday against the headquarters of the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court, according to sources consulted by ‘O Globo’.
For the moment, about 600 people have been released, those over 65 years old, suffering from diseases or mothers with small children in their care, while another 500 have been transferred to two penitentiaries in Brasilia.
