Chinese authorities on Wednesday advocated «active dialogue» with Taiwanese representatives throughout 2023 in a bid to achieve «peaceful reunification» of the territory.
The spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the Asian giant, Ma Xiaoguang, has indicated in a statement that the government «will continue to hold comprehensive and in-depth consultations with representatives from all areas of the Taiwanese community.»
Thus, he pointed out that he hopes «to continue exchanging positions to stimulate the peaceful development of ties between the parties, especially in the Taiwan Strait».
Official relations between Beijing and Taipei were suspended in 1949 after the forces of the Chinese nationalist Kuomintang Party, led by Chiang Kai Shek, suffered a defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party of China and moved to Taiwan.
Ties between Taiwan and mainland China were re-established only on a business and informal level in the late 1980s, although recently there has been an increase in tension between the parties.
