The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced on Tuesday that he will ask the Attorney General’s Office to carry out an «in-depth» investigation of the possible interceptions made by the former Executive of his electoral campaign in relation to the so-called Petrovideos.

The decision was made public in response to an investigation published by the Noticias Uno chain, which indicates that videos of Petro’s campaign meetings were leaked with the help of artificial cyber-intelligence.

«If this investigation is confirmed, we would be facing a ‘Watergate’. A government spying on the opposition, interfering with their communications and in the middle of an election campaign,» said the Colombian president in a message on the social network Twitter.

«I will ask the Attorney General’s Office for a thorough investigation of the interceptions made to my campaign,» he added.

The so-called Petrovideos published in Semana.com, Caracol Radio and ‘El Tiempo’ proved the preparation of black propaganda to counteract his rivals in the presidential race Federico Gutierrez, Sergio Fajardo and Alejandro Gaviria.

In these «illegal wiretaps», as Petro has previously called them, his campaign team talks about weakening his political rivals and even about some visits to prisons offering «no extradition to those who can be extradited».

The recordings emerged shortly after the now president was first in the polls of voting intentions for the second round of the elections, all this after being the most voted in the first round by a wide lead.
