Russia’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday announced a new commander in charge of Russian forces deployed in Ukraine, where Moscow is keeping open what it describes as a «special military operation.»
The government has confirmed in a statement the appointment of Valeri Gerasimov as the new military commander in Ukraine, as well as those who will be his subordinates, without specifying the reasons for this change, reports the Interfax news agency.
Gerasimov, who was already an important figure in the Armed Forces organization chart, replaces Sergei Surovikin, who was appointed in November 2022 and who will now act as deputy.
The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has also advocated at a meeting of the Government to continue strengthening armament aspects and «undoubtedly» to solve «all the problems» related to the supply of troops deployed on Ukrainian territory, according to the TASS agency.
Logistical problems, as well as others related to the chain of command, would be marking Russia’s deployment in the neighboring country, where fighting continues mainly in the east. On Wednesday, the parties have given contradictory versions of the situation in the locality of Soledar, a few kilometers from Bajmut.
