Turkey would have started sending cluster bombs to Ukraine by the end of 2022, after several requests from Kiev to the Biden Administration, ‘Foreign Policy’ magazine has learned.
The weapons, designed to destroy tanks by exploding in submunitions, would have been shipped from Ankara since early November 2022, according to the cited media outlet.
However, the sources consulted by ‘Foreign Policy’ have not been able to confirm whether the Turkish weapons have been used during the fighting, which began on February 24, 2022, on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
«After the U.S. denied (Ukraine’s) access to cluster munitions, Turkey was the only place where they could obtain them,» the source explained on condition of anonymity.
In this regard, he has added that this move proves that, although «Turkey is getting closer to Russia in some respects, it has become a very important military support for Ukraine.»
