Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski announced Tuesday the withdrawal of the citizenship of several opposition deputies for their alleged links with Russia.
«If the people’s deputies choose to serve not the people of Ukraine, but the murderers who came to Ukraine, our actions will be appropriate,» Zelenski has stated in the evening video he has been pronouncing every day since the invasion by Russian troops began on February 24, 2022.
«On the basis of the materials prepared by the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Migration Service of Ukraine, and in accordance with the Constitution of our state, I have decided to cancel the citizenship of four people,» the Ukrainian leader explained.
Zelensky said that the deputies are Andriy Leonidovich Derkach, Taras Romanovich Kozak, Renat Raveliyovich Kuzmin and Viktor Volodimirovich Medvedchuk.
The four lawmakers represented the pro-Russian Ukrainian party Opposition Platform – For Life, banned after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The last of them, Medvedchuk, is a pro-Russian oligarch who was exchanged last September 22 for more than 200 Ukrainian prisoners.
Zelenski welcomed the agreement, which he called «a victory for society»: «It is not a pity to give Medvedchuk for real warriors,» he insisted.
