The Belarusian opposition on Wednesday denounced the arrest of former presidential candidate Andrei Dmitriev, who won 1.20 percent of the vote in the 2020 presidential election, considered by the international community as a fraud.
Belarusian security forces have detained the former presidential candidate and also founder of the Say the Truth party, according to sources from the opponent’s entourage to the portal Mediazona.
Dmitriev was reportedly taken to the Okrestina Detention Center, a pre-trial detention center in Minsk, the country’s capital.
In August 2021, the oppositionist was also arrested and released shortly after he had expressed his support for the protests that took place for weeks after the August 9 presidential election, in which President Alexsander Lukashenko won his sixth term in office.
Andrei Dmitriev was a presidential candidate in the August 2020 elections. In 2021, Say the Truth was outlawed by a decision of the Supreme Court.
