The chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, an ally of former Prime Minister Imran Jan, has signed a petition to dissolve the Punjab Assembly just hours after winning the confidence of the House the day before.
The decision was taken Thursday after a meeting with Jan at his residence in Lahore after winning the confidence of the Assembly with 186 votes in favor of 371 members in a session that lasted until midnight.
The opposition, led by the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) boycotted the session, although finally the president of the Punjab Assembly, Sibtain Khan, announced the results of Elahi’s victory, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Hindu’.
Jan had intended to dissolve two of the four provincial assemblies to force early elections in the country when his party, Pakistan Justice Movement (Tehreek e Insaf) won the Punjab elections, taking fifteen of the twenty seats at stake.
