Hungarian President Katalin Novak on Thursday urged the international community to prevent NATO’s entry into the war in Ukraine and called for «thinking about Europe’s survival» as the Russian invasion of the territory advances.
At a meeting attended by foreign ambassadors working on Hungarian soil, he stressed the need to «be pragmatic», in addition to taking into account «the survival of Europe».
«NATO must stay out of the war, we cannot allow it to be carried away by feelings and get involved in the conflict,» he said, while asking diplomats to work in a spirit of «mutual respect» between different cultures.
Thus, he stressed that Hungarians «are good at resisting crises» and indicated that, fortunately, the country «has already managed to overcome the coronavirus pandemic», according to information from the newspaper ‘Magyar Hirlap’.
«We still have to deal with the economic and social consequences. The war in Ukraine has broken out and many European countries have problems with energy supply», he said before stating that «migration pressure is increasing on the southern borders of the country».
In this sense, he admitted that there is a certain «uncertainty among the population» and pointed out that «salaries are not competitive in some sectors», added to the «disputes with Brussels».
