U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Thursday accused White House tenant Joe Biden of being aware of the existence of classified documents in one of his homes.
According to McCarthy, the fact that Biden required the services of his lawyer to remove the documents from his private office shows that the president was aware that the files were confidential.
«I think if he calls a lawyer to remove something from his office, he must have known in advance (…) I think he has a lot of answers for the American public,» said McCarthy, who assured that Congress «can get those answers».
The White House confirmed Thursday the discovery of a second batch of classified documents in the garage of a Delaware home owned by Biden, criticized in recent days by the management of the theoretically protected material during his time as ‘number two’ in the administration of Barack Obama.
The president himself has defended his collaboration with the authorities, in brief statements to the media in which he insisted that he has always taken «seriously» the manipulation of official documents. He explained that the material in question was in his «personal library», in «a locked garage».
This controversy has led to criticism of Biden by the Republican Party, as well as former President Donald Trump, who has denounced an alleged double standard by the authorities. The FBI searched Trump’s mansion in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, last year.
In fact, McCarthy has questioned the reasons for not publishing images of the documents found in Biden’s premises, in allusion to a photograph that did emerge of the files found in Mar-a-Lago.
For the moment, the White House has not responded to McCarthy’s accusations about Biden’s alleged knowledge of the existence of these classified documents in the garage of his home in Delaware.
