The Ukrainian military authorities confirmed Thursday that in recent weeks they are strengthening defensive capabilities on the border with Belarus, although at the moment no «quantitative or qualitative» changes of Belarusian troops have been detected.
The commander of the Joint Forces of the Ukrainian Army, General Sergei Naev, explained that «Belarus does not represent a direct threat to Ukraine», but that Kiev has given the order to increase the defensive capabilities and the training of its troops.
Naev also informed that the Ukrainian authorities are in constant communication with some of their main partners, especially the United States and Poland, to monitor the situation on the border and to warn of possible moves by Minsk, Ukrinform reports.
Ukraine has warned this week that Russia plans to deploy a new group of troops on Belarusian territory under the guise of a joint military training program. Kiev fears that Moscow could launch a new ground offensive towards the capital, as happened in the early stages of the war.
That is why the Ukrainian Armed Forces have mined the main points through which Russian troops and tanks could hypothetically advance in case of a new ground offensive.
