Bolivian Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta has denounced comments made by U.S. Undersecretary of State Bian A. Nichols following the arrest of Santa Cruz Governor Luis Fernando Camacho and warned that they could be considered «interference».
Mayta warned in a press conference that comments such as those made by Nichols «are not appropriate in international relations», and urged the United States to abide by the principle of «mutual respect and non-interference», according to the Bolivian channel Unitel.
Undersecretary Nichols launched on Thursday a publication in his official Twitter profile where he expressed the concern with which the United States received information about «violence in Bolivia» since the end of the year, coinciding with the arrest of Camacho.
«We urge all Bolivians to dialogue for peace and unity and respect Human Rights, which include due process and freedom of expression established in the CPE (Bolivian Constitution) and international conventions,» Nichols said.
Camacho is the governor of the richest region of Bolivia and historically opposed to the governments of the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), scene in the last month of new protests and blockades, this time to oppose the population census law.
His arrest is motivated by his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that took place after the opposition, supported by the Armed Forces, pressured former president Evo Morales to renounce his victory in the October 2019 elections.
