Kazakhstan’s Parliament on Friday rescinded a 2000 constitutional law that guaranteed former President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his family immunity and privileges for having been at the helm of the country.
Thus, 93 deputies, out of a total of 137, voted in favor of reversing this measure, which implies the withdrawal of privileges such as lifetime protection for him and his family members.
The bill, which has been approved, will pass ultimately to the hands of the current president, Kasim Yomart Tokayev, who will have to ratify it. In 2022, Tokayev relieved Nazarbayev as head of the National Security Council, the Peoples’ Assembly and the Nur Otan party – later renamed Amanat -.
The former president, who led the country between 1990 and 2019, has thus been losing privileges and could face investigations or criminal proceedings for violations committed under his mandate, according to information from the newspaper ‘Kazakhstanskaya Pravda’.
