Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday accused the U.S. authorities of «profiting» from the war in Ukraine and noted that he cannot «single-handedly lift the sanctions imposed against Russia.»
«Only France and Germany can do it,» he has asserted in relation to the measures introduced by the European Union against Moscow since the beginning of the Russian invasion, which he has repeatedly opposed.
Thus, he stressed that he can only «reduce the damage caused by the sanctions to his country», as he indicated in declarations to the radio station Kossuth.
«Only the Germans and the French can change the EU’s position on sanctions, and Hungary’s political resources are not enough for that. I can only contain the damage,» he pointed out before stressing his «negative» view of these sanctions.
In this sense, he stressed that at some point, «someone in the EU will say that we have spoiled everything and will ask us to stop». «The problems brought about by the sanctions will only increase,» he said. «If we withdraw them, energy prices will fall immediately, and with them inflation,» he added.
Moreover, he has reaffirmed his position that «Europe is the real loser in this conflict, while the United States is the one who benefits.» «From an economic point of view, the main loser in Ukraine is Europe,» he maintained.
