Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday attended the funeral of Murtaza Rakhimov, prime minister of the Bashkortostan region, who died on Wednesday at the age of 88.
After his arrival in the Russian city of Ufa, Putin went to the Bashkortostan State Hall, where a farewell ceremony was held, TASS news agency reported.
Putin placed a bouquet of roses next to one of the pedestals and approached the coffin, where he remained silent for several minutes. Finally, he bowed for a few seconds before leaving the hall.
Rakhimov died on January 11 after suffering a long illness, but he headed the region for more than two decades. He also presided over the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic until 1993.
