Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky announced Thursday the dispatch of military reinforcements to the eastern Ukrainian cities of Soledar and Bajmut, in an area where the efforts of the Russian Armed Forces are currently focused.
«The main issue is Soledar, Bajmut, the struggle for the leadership of Donetsk in general. We have discussed in detail what decisions are needed, what reinforcements are needed, what steps commanders should take in the coming days,» Zelensky said, after a meeting with the General Staff.
Ukrainian authorities warned on Monday that the Russian army had launched a new offensive against Soledar, following the latest unsuccessful attempts to seize control of the locality.
For its part, the Wagner mercenary group claimed on Tuesday to have seized the town of Soledar after intense battles, while Kiev has denied that the town is completely under the control of Russian forces.
In addition, Moscow has reshuffled the military leadership by changing the head of the Russian forces deployed in Ukraine, who is now Valeri Gerasimov.
