The U.S. House Judiciary Committee announced Friday that it has opened an investigation into classified documents of current President Joe Biden during his tenure as Vice President in the Barack Obama Administration.
Republican Representatives Jim Jordan — chairman of the panel — and Mike Johnson have written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland communicating the start of the investigation and requesting documents related to the case, such as reports from the Department of Justice, the FBI and the White House, or the appointment of the special counsel overseeing the case.
«We are monitoring the Department of Justice’s actions regarding former Vice President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents, including the apparently unauthorized possession of classified material in a private office in Washington DC and in the garage of his residence in Wilmington, Delaware,» the missive reads.
«We look forward to your full cooperation with our inquiry,» added Jordan and Johnson, who requested that the materials be sent by January 27.
The missive focused on concerns about «transparency and accountability at our highest levels of the executive branch,» as the White House declined to comment on details about how the documents were found in Biden’s office and home, or when the discovery of the classified materials was communicated.
Biden’s lawyers found two batches of documents, the first on November 2, six days before the mid-term congressional elections, at the Penn Biden Center; while the second was found on December 20 in a garage belonging to the president.
Biden’s lawyers alerted the National Archives to the presence of these materials, however, this has been made public this week.
