The Minister of Justice of Peru, José Tello, said Monday that the Congress has the possibility of advancing elections this 2023 and that as a Government «there would be no problem» in assuming such decision. «We are abiding by the constitutional framework», he remarked.
Tello recalled that although Congress already decided in a first vote to advance elections to April 2024, it has the authority to mark them already in 2023 based on the «full» and «autonomous» decision that the chamber has to legislate.
«They could decide to bring them forward to 2023 and for us there would be no problem because we abide by the constitutional framework and also the separation of powers and the decisions that Congress can make,» he said.
Regarding the refusal of the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, to leave office after the criticism she is receiving for the police repression of the protests -which have already left about forty dead- Tello has valued that it is a «brave decision» since her departure would create more instability.
«Dina Boluarte is guaranteeing that there will be an Executive that will lead, together with the Legislative and other State and electoral bodies, an orderly transition towards the year 2024», said Tello in declarations to RPP.
The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Jose Tello, pointed out that the declaration of the state of emergency in Callao, Cusco, Lima and Puno is a measure to protect the population from situations of violence.
Like other ministers of Boluarte’s cabinet, Tello has justified the measures imposed during the protests by the actions carried out by the «violent», at the same time that he trusts that the Prosecutor’s Office can advance in the clarification of the deaths that have occurred during the police repression of the demonstrations.
