Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has once again reiterated his appeal to the German authorities to supply battle tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, warning that a Russian victory in the conflict could lead to a third world war.
Morawiecki visited Berlin on Monday as part of an event organized by the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, which opposes the government of the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, and on which in recent weeks there has been increasing pressure, especially from Warsaw, to increase arms deliveries to Kiev.
Thus, from the German capital, the Polish Prime Minister has demanded from the German authorities «decisive actions» to allow «the delivery of all types of weapons to Ukraine» in the context of a war that is now approaching its eleventh month of activity without any sign of a peace agreement.
«If we have been investing for years in heavy war equipment and tanks, they should not stay for us in warehouses, but be put in the hands of the defenders of Europe,» Prime Minister Morawiecki has asserted.
The Polish authorities announced last week the shipment of German-made Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine. Since then, both Polish President Andrzej Duda and the Prime Minister have intensified pressure on Berlin to adhere to these supplies.
However, according to the Leopard sales contracts between Warsaw and Berlin, the German authorities must agree to the transfer of these tanks to third countries. It is true that Germany does not seem to have put any obstacle in the way of the Leopards from Poland ending up in Ukrainian hands.
