The UN Office for Human Rights has already confirmed more than 7,000 civilian deaths in the context of the conflict unleashed in February 2022 by the military offensive launched by Russia on Ukraine, although it assumes that the actual number of victims will be «considerably higher».

The United Nations prepares its own count based on verified information and has so far recorded 7,031 deaths, including 433 minors. In the first two weeks of January alone, at least 388 civilians have lost their lives.

In addition, 11,327 people have been wounded since the beginning of the offensive, including 827 children. In this case, the number of wounded includes 284 people who have suffered some kind of damage from the conflict between January 1 and 15.

Most of the casualties are in eastern Ukraine – in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions alone there are 9,853 dead or wounded – while most of the damage inflicted on civilians derives from the use of wide-range explosive weapons, e.g. missile launches or artillery shells.

The UN has admitted that it lacks information on areas where there has been «heavy» fighting, such as the Russian-controlled city of Mariupol. It has also clarified that it only includes in its report cases that it has been able to verify.
