The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has assured on Tuesday that the joint aid to Ukraine from the European institutions and the member states of the bloc is close to 50 billion euros, which makes Europe the main support to Kiev in the face of Russian aggression above the United States.

«It is to Europe’s honor to help Ukraine defend itself against the aggression it is suffering. I have devoted a lot of effort to make this possible, to build unity around decisions that have allowed Ukraine to resist,» said the head of European diplomacy in a debate at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

As detailed by Borrell, the total sum of military, financial and humanitarian aid is close to 50 billion euros. «This puts us in the first place among the countries on the amount of aid provided to Ukraine above the United States,» he stressed before the MEPs.

In any case, he has insisted that this aid «is not enough» as long as Ukraine continues to suffer the systematic attack of the Russian Army, which he has accused of trying to destroy the neighboring country. «We will have to support and not only militarily Ukraine. We will have to keep the door open to negotiations, but to make peace it takes two and for war it only takes one,» he lamented.

The head of European diplomacy concluded by defending that the EU, apart from being a commercial power and a bulwark of Human Rights, must be able to use «hard power» when necessary and have the capacity to influence the international scene. «Unfortunately not everyone thinks like us and some prefer force to rule. In the face of this we must have the capacity to respond,» he concluded.
