China’s population has fallen for the first time in six decades during 2022, bringing the birth rate down to a historic low, underscoring the country’s deepening demographic crisis.

The Asian giant registered 1.41 billion inhabitants at the end of the year in 2022, plummeting by 850,000 people compared to data from the last month of 2021, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Approximately 9.56 million babies were born in 2022, the lowest level since 1950 when records began, with 6.77 births per 1,000 people, despite the Chinese government’s birth rate policies, the ‘South Chin Morning Post’ newspaper reports.

On the other hand, according to official data, 10.41 million people have died, marking a slight increase from the nearly 10 million deaths reported in previous years.

However, this year the number of COVID-19-related deaths could rise considerably, as the Chinese government withdrew anti-Covid measures in December due to social protests.

Since then, the country has recorded an outbreak that has led to an increase in the number of cases, which is of concern to the international community due to the lack of transparency in the magnitude of the situation.
