Former Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán has asked Mexican authorities to transfer him from the Colorado prison in the United States, where he is serving a life sentence, to a prison in Mexico.
El Chapo’s lawyer, José Refugio, said Tuesday that the famous drug trafficker wants to make this request to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, alleging that in the last six years «he has never seen the sunlight», has barely received any visitors and is not fed with quality food.
«Given the degrading conditions he lives in a prison in the United States, Joaquín Guzmán asks the president to repair the violations of the government of (former Mexican President Enrique) Peña Nieto with his case and seek channels for him to return to a Mexican prison,» Refugio said, according to ‘El Universal’.
Questioned about this matter, President López Obrador assured after a press conference that he was not aware of the statements made by ‘El Capo’s’ lawyer. «Let’s see,» said the Mexican president.
In July 2019, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was sentenced to life imprisonment by the United States Justice accused of eight counts of drug trafficking and organized crime, 30 years in prison for carrying weapons and another 20 years in prison for money laundering.
